Interesting that not one mention is made about winning or success in the field of play.

Their mission statement should be :

" In accordance with Vincentian principles , athletics shall continually strive for mediocrity in a non transparent manner " .

Your comments underscore the need and issue for NU to manage its athletic assets more wisely.

Currenttly and over the last several decades NU has neglected to recognize and exploit opportunities for athletic growth and as a result not only have athletics drifted aimlessly, NU’s academic mission and endowment potential has also been severely compromised, IMO, from its manifest destiny.

Wise and well-managed athletic investments result in excellent and predictable academic returns; this concept/protocol, the related analytic tools readily available and the bounty of supporting evidence has been completely and totally ignored by NU administration after administration, and continues to this day.

NU’s admin needs to grasp a better understanding of the basic and relevant analytic processes in terms of athletic investment returns and, unfortunately, the admin has demonstrated no desire or appetite for change. This is regrettable, especially when other schools are advancing through much more thoughtful management. NU’s preferred focus is on control, 100% control by a few while at the expense of many. As a result the University, students, alums and community have suffered while a disdain for communication has flourished to wit the demise of the University newspaper (Index) and The Eagle Magazine which has not referenced sports in years and not much on academia per se, either. Without a vibrant, well-informed and questioning student body via a university paper and informed alumni via The Eagle, et al, events such as the McLaughlin (Dean of Student) debacle, the inexplicable renewing of contracts of coaching non-performers with no reasonable hope for success manifest an unquestioning audience on campus and from distant alums….just the way the admin wants….no questions, total admin control and with an attitude that they’re the best, know the most, etc.

Really?

Look around, examine NU to its peer group and what could have been---the broad-growth discrepancies are palatable. The admin should be soundly embarrassed but apparently not.

The good news is that NU is positioned to reinvent itself quickly; the athletic programs could be in strong growth mode once with key administrative changes, academics would soar and so would NU’s endowment. However, every day of postponement is another day representing lost opportunity.

There is no need to employ endowed funds for facilities; simply manage the two athletic programs with significant net revenue potential, basketball and hockey, adroitly and all will fall in place quickly and NU will grow in many areas overnight.

There are many fine and talented people at NU but it all begins at the top. Without leadership characterized by visible action and deeds rather than idle pontifications, advancement and remediation is impossible.

PS: I understand that some will view the above as negative and disloyal. So be it. I believe the comments represents a sober assessment of NU’s current profile. I have no beef with anyone, just a love for NU. I do talk with many people off line re NU and it seems to me that many are pretty much in agreement but keep writing “they need time”. Time for what? Time waits for no one. Where is the light at the end of the tunnel? At NU blind faith has been the request for decades; same at DePaul and St. John’s….and they’re all mere shadows of their former selves as well. The academic business model must change at all three schools if they wish to remain relevant and honor their lifelong commitment to their alumni, the University’s true investors IMO.

I think tho the ship has sailed at NU. It's over. I can't imagine subjecting myself to another clown show of a season.

I can literally(we all can) watch any college team we want thanks to the marvels of technology. Why even deal with NU? What does another 6 win season look and sound like ? Enough is enough.

Is NU doing anything to on board new fans?
Is NU doing anything to improve their product ?
Has there been any tangible improvements since that joke of a video series?
NU sports are worse off than a year ago, than two years ago, than three years ago etc.

We all know this. Slowly even the hard core fans aren't caring


Let me share a marketing principle as it relates to NU...


NU sports is like death metal. There are no "casual" fans. You are either hard core or don't care. No one in buffalo 18-34 could name the coach let alone 1 player on the team. Once the hard core fans go you are screwed. It's over. You can no longer build your brand or be successful.

NU for all their mistakes had a window. They squandered it.

Oh well. There are plenty of options. NU sports isn't one of them. It'll never be again

Every meaningful growth spurt and advancement is characterized by on leader daring to do more and try harder. All we need is enlightened management and the ship, IMO, can be turned around and at the lead quickly.

Niagara is probably the best situated university in the nation for growth; consider:

• The Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area, encompassing two counties, Erie and Niagara, has a population (2010 census) of 1,135,509 and to the east is Rochester (Monroe County) with a MSA population of 1,054,323, for a combined western NYS demographic of 2.2 million people.

• A stone’s throw away from the Falls (NY) is Ontario, Canada with a population of 13,000,000 and Toronto, a city of nearly 6,000,000, is within 1.5 hours drive from Niagara Falls, NY. As important, the Ontario Ministry of Finance projects the Ontario Golden Horseshoe to grow over the next 23 years, rising 34.4 per cent, to 17.7 million by 2036.

• Niagara Falls, NY has 8.4 million visitors a year and only about 2 miles from NU…such a great opportunity to present the University.

The admin and coaches complain? They're sitt'n on a gold mine and don't even know it.

Looks like they handle things a little differently at ND.

Six Notre Dame players arrested in two separate incidents

Six Notre Dame players were arrested in separate incidents that took place Friday night and Saturday morning in Indiana, according to CSNChicago.

Five of those players — senior safety Max Redfield, sophomore linebacker Te'von Coney, sophomore running back Dexter Williams, redshirt freshman cornerback Ashton White and freshman receiver Kevin Stepherson — were booked on possession on marijuana charges.

Redfield, Stepherson and Williams were also booked on charges of possessing a handgun without a license. Both of those charges are misdemeanors.

Senior cornerback Devin Butler faces a felony charge after being booked for battery to a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest.

Butler was arrested in South Bend, while the other incident took place in Fulton County.

According to a Notre Dame spokesman Paul Browne, Butler could face dismissal from the school.
"Any student arrested on a felony charge also faces dismissal from the university. The university will determine if additional sanctions should apply to any or all of the students charged," Browne said in a statement.

NU's policy under Gray: No news, no comment and no acknowledgement. What's our policy on felonies? We know its more than three, maybe four, five, six?
